What the experts say I

  • For this post I would like to talk a bit more in depth about the topic from the other point of view, which is the psychological approach. There is an article (Who Suffers From Distortion) focusing on poor body image and how it can influence a person's academic or professional performance, relationship fulfillments, and general quality of life in a variety of ways, which I really enjoyed reading about and finding out new information, so I decided to share that with all of you on this blog!

  • The term “body dissatisfaction” is used in this article many times and it refers to a situation in which a person is not satisfied with the look of their own bodies and is in a constant need to want to change it for the better. “Body dissatisfaction can be minor, too bad my nose is so big, or it can be severe, I hate everything about my body. Once you start to think that you have a flaw, your mind runs with the distraction and turns it into more than it is. All of which affects the way you think and feel about how you look, and about life in general.” (Psychology Today, April 2022).

  • One of the things that surprised me the most about the article was the part about who suffers from distortion, as it said that thoughts and opinions about one's body can start forming from the age of 3, which is so soon. Parents might not even realize that the negative attitude towards a child's eating habits might stay with the kids for a long time, and might even develop severe mental problems or issues about body image, since they might have started to be concerned about their body weight and how they appear to others, which, in this young age is not a healthy way of dealing with these.
